How to Set Up Video Autoplay

Adding video content to your website can enhance engagement and user experience—especially when implemented strategically. However, when it comes to autoplaying videos, there are a few important considerations, limitations, and best practices to follow.

Video Autoplay on Mobile devices

Modern browsers require videos to be muted in order for autoplay to function. This is a privacy and user-experience safeguard to prevent unexpected audio playback when a page loads.

  • Use a muted video or one without an audio track.
  • Use a video with sound and expect it to autoplay.

It’s important to know that videos will not autoplay on mobile devices, regardless of whether they are muted or not. This restriction is imposed by most mobile browsers and cannot be bypassed, even through code or plugins.

Background Autoplayed Videos: what works best

For background autoplay scenarios, we advise to avoid using YouTube or Vimeo videos. These platforms add extra loading time, watermarks, and controls that aren't ideal for seamless background playback.

  • Use locally hosted videos with no audio track.
  • Alternatively, consider using animated GIFs for simple, silent looping visuals.

These methods are more reliable and ensure better control over the autoplay behavior.

Suggested Tools for Standard Videos

For standard video content (not used as a background), we recommend:

  • Using the Popup Video Element
  • Or the Video Press Block
